George Orwell's 1984 should be a must read in high school and college. Unfortunately (or maybe I should say "fortunately"), it was by accident that I had come upon this book when I was in high school.
In "1984," George Orwell paints a picture of a future where history is constantly rewritten based upon political expediency. Freedom has been stamped out while spies, including one's own children, are constantly on the lookout for anything that may betray a person's anti-government feelings. Even television watches the viewer. Hence, "Big Brother is watching."
While the year 1984 has come and gone, the threat of tyranny is ever present. Thus, the need for future generations to read this book if only to ensure that the freedom we hold so dear should remain ours.
