From the Publisher

Celebrate the 60th anniversary of Orwell's masterpiece 1984

Written in 1948, 1984 was George Orwell's chilling prophecy about the future. And while 1984 has come and gone, Orwell's narrative is timelier than ever. 1984 presents a startling and haunting vision of the world, so powerful that it is completely convincing from start to finish. No one can deny the power of this novel, its hold on the imaginations of multiple generations of readers, or the resiliency of its admonitions—a legacy that seems only to grow with the passage of time.

George Orwell's 1984 should be a must read in high school and college. Unfortunately (or maybe I should say "fortunately"), it was by accident that I had come upon this book when I was in high school.

In "1984," George Orwell paints a picture of a future where history is constantly rewritten based upon political expediency. Freedom has been stamped out while spies, including one's own children, are constantly on the lookout for anything that may betray a person's anti-government feelings. Even television watches the viewer. Hence, "Big Brother is watching."

While the year 1984 has come and gone, the threat of tyranny is ever present. Thus, the need for future generations to read this book if only to ensure that the freedom we hold so dear should remain ours.
